do you use service-Learning?
The Office of Academic Service-Learning at St. John's University is currently examining (and adjusting) faculty participation goals by benchmarking other U.S. institutions with service-learning programs.

They have asked Creighton to identify the number of faculty that used academic service-learning in their courses for the 2010-2011 academic year.

To assist both St. John's and our own campus reporting, please contact Mary Ann Danielson,, if you either teach service-learning courses or know of others who use this pedagogy in their courses.

This information will improve Creighton's annual reporting for the President's Honor Roll for Community Service, as well as assist St. John's in its research efforts.

President's Honor Roll for Community Service
Thank you to almost 30 individuals from 22 different offices, colleges, or schools who helped compile the data for our 2010-2011 submission to the President's Honor Roll for Community Service. The report was filed on Friday, Dec. 9, and the results will be shared in an upcoming newsletter. The two programs below highlight how our students blend service with campus life.
Athletes reach out
Creighton student-athletes are frequently recognized for their team accomplishments and their individual academic achievements; however, their service is often not recognized. In 2009-2010, 231 student-athletes volunteered more than 6,000 hours with metro area school districts, Special Olympics, Children's Hospital, Siena/Francis House and many other community partners. Go Jays!
Campus ministry engages
Faith development is closely tied to students' intellectual development. Creighton students have the opportunity to actively engage their faith in programs such as "Hand-in-Hand," an annual event that hosts adults with special needs for an afternoon of socializing, dancing and fun, and "Justice Walking," Creighton's version of "Just Faith," which integrates principles of Catholic Social teaching with weekly service, reflections and an immersion. Metropolitan Coalition for Service Learning News
2011 Theme: refugees
Creighton University is a member of the Metro Area Service-Learning Coalition. The 2011 theme is "Refugees."

The Coalition seeks to (1) increase collaboration and share selected service-learning programming among nine metro-area universities; (2) to offer coordinated programming on a selected topic each semester; and (3) to bring university and college resources to bear in educating students and the public about selected significant local, national and international issues.

Paper summarizes study
Thanks to Helen Shew (Center for Health Policy and Ethics) for recommending the following article: The Community-Campus Partnerships for Health paper Key Influences on Long-Term Sustainability of Service-Learning in Higher Education.

The latest issue of NSEE Perspectives, published by the National Society of Experiential Education, features results from the 10-year follow-up study of the Health Professions Schools in Service to the Nation (HPSISN) Program led by CCPH senior consultant Amanda Vogel. HPSISN was the first and still the only national demonstration program of service-learning in health professions education.

The paper summarizes the methods and findings from the study, and provides links to webpages where you can read more detailed descriptions, access their interview guide, and read about related prior research. Read the paper.
