September 22, 2011

Dr. Ann Malone Berger has been called a “splendid example for nursing – inquisitive, compassionate, dedicated, and a consistent patient advocate.” Her many accomplishments in the field of clinical nursing and oncology strongly support that assessment.

Dr. Berger has distinguished herself most notably for her work in fatigue, especially as it relates to cancer and chemotherapy. As a researcher, she was passionate to discover interventions that would relieve the symptoms often associated with therapies intended to cure cancer. Dr. Berger and her team of researchers received a $1.5 million grant from the National Institute of Nursing to study chemotherapy fatigue, the first study of its kind. Dr. Berger recruited 220 women with breast cancer to participate in the study. Outcomes included indentifying the need for more sleep and healthy eating habits to directly impact physical and mental well-being. Patients called her interventions life-changing.

Dr. Berger received her undergraduate degree in nursing from Creighton and master and doctoral degrees from the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). Her clinical background includes a decade in all levels of coronary care and more than two decades in oncology nursing care. She has held positions in Washington, California and Nebraska and currently holds the Professor Dorothy Hodges Olson Endowed Chair in Nursing at the UNMC College of Nursing, and is director of the doctoral program. In 2005, she received UNMC’s Outstanding Teacher Award and was named a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing.

Dr. Berger is consistently recognized by her peers as a leader, clinician, researcher and educator of the first rank. In the Jesuit tradition of men and women for others, she gives unselfishly to her community and to her parish. Dr. Berger frequently teaches oncology continuing education classes for nurses and has served on her local school board, her church council and as a Girl Scout leader. She has touched, and continues to touch, many lives.

Creighton University is proud to confer upon Dr. Ann Malone Berger the 2011 Creighton University Alumni Merit Award for the School of Nursing.
