From the earliest days of his career, Doug Pick excelled at building relationships. As a community pharmacist, he demonstrated concern for people and a true passion for helping them. In 1990, he opened his own pharmacy, championing trust and integrity as hallmarks of the profession. In 1992, Doug partnered with his college roommate and colleague, Dr. Michael Makoid, to found a pharmacy benefits management firm. Doug’s vision was to represent the profession from the pharmacist’s point of view and help employers understand how affordable access to pharmacists and medications could enhance their employees’ lives.

Nearly 20 years later, Doug continues his work balancing the goals of employers with protecting the benefits of workers and retirees. Pharmaceutical Technologies, Inc. (PTI) designs performance network pharmacy concepts. Through a digital provider network, PTI connects employers' prescription plans with pharmacies nationwide. PTI also provides a benefit card designed by pharmacists to promote competition. Doug is an avid supporter of the use of technology to advance the profession and as a result, PTI offers medication therapy management programs and patient safety and electronic prescribing initiatives that support safe drug therapy through the use of technology. The Omaha-based company employs more than 150 people in Nebraska with facilities in Colorado, Wyoming and California. PTI’s 3,500 clients represent more than 2.7 million employees and dependents.

As President and CEO, Doug has been honored with the Blue Chip Enterprise Award for small business and the Omaha 25 Excellence in Business Award. He is active in his church, in state and national pharmacy organizations and on local boards. He was appointed to the Board of the Omaha Housing Authority and is a member of the Omaha Sports Commission. His nominators stress that Doug’s high moral character and strong sense of commitment bring out the best in others. He does not take lightly the oath he took as a pharmacist, nor the compassion and trust that others continue to place in him.

Creighton University is proud to confer upon Douglas M. Pick the 2011 Alumni Merit Award for the School of Pharmacy and Health Professions.
