As senior faculty associate of Creighton University's Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) program, through the Office for Academic Excellence and Assessment (AEA), I welcome you to the first e-newsletter focusing on SoTL news and events.

SoTL builds upon the concept advanced by The Carnegie Foundation with the establishment of the Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) in 1998. It invites faculty to examine their own classroom practice, document what works, and share lessons learned in ways that others can build on.

The purpose of this e-newsletter is to keep you informed and engaged regarding SoTL news and promote the practice of SoTL among faculty.

update on castl: the 2010 Institute
Creativity was the theme of the 2010 Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) Institute held at Creighton June 2-5, attracting 120 participants, scholars, mentors, speakers and administrators. The institute is designed to offer faculty, university administrators/staff, and graduate students a variety of opportunities to develop and promote the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL).

Three Creighton Faculty were among the competitively selected 2010 CASTL Scholars: Allison Grayev, radiology, "Evaluation of a Formal Computed Tomograpy (CT) Education Curriculum"; Joy Doll, physical and occupational therapy, "Cross-cultural Communication: Using iPods as a Health Education Tool"; Caroline Goulet and Joy Doll (in collaboration with Susan Klappa, St. Catherine University), physical and occupational therapy, "Teaching Social Responsibility: Carrying Powerful Images into Professional Practice."

Faculty spotlight
meet dr. Alsharif
Naser Alsharif, Pharm.D., Ph.D., is an associate professor of pharmacy sciences in the School of Pharmacy and Health Professions. Dr. Alsharif's main research area is toxicology; however, for the past 16 years, he has been pursuing a systematic study of his teaching and has published many SoTL articles focusing on technology in the classroom and the divide between campus and distance students. Last Call for SoTL Work-group
A yearlong work-group, led by Naser Alsharif (pharmacy) and Gintaras Duda (physics), will begin meeting soon, with the goal of establishing a community of SoTL scholars at Creighton. These scholars will learn from each other and help each other plan, develop and implement a SoTL project in a course, a program, a school or the University at large in the spring semester. Those interested in participating, are asked to e-mail Gintaras Duda or Naser Alsharif.
Journal online
The current issue of International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning is now online. The submission deadline for the special 5th anniversary issue is Nov. 15, 2010.

Upcoming conferences
Conference at mcmaster
The Research on Teaching and Learning conference will be held at McMaster University on Dec. 9, 2010. This year's theme is "Integrating practices," which will provide a broad framework for bringing together diverse perspectives. The conference aims to generate conversations and exchanges across disciplines and institutions in order to bridge gaps between classroom research and practice to make teaching more evidence-informed. Proposals due Nov. 10 for commons conference
The 4th annual SoTL Commons Conference will be held March 9-11, 2011, at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Ga. Typically, attendees come from 10 to 15 countries. Faculty and academic administrators are invited to participate. The submission-of-proposals period ends Nov. 10, 2010. More 

2011 Castl institute
The 2011 CASTL Institute will again be held at Creighton on June 1-4; the theme is "Transformational Learning: Engaging Education in a Global World." Please watch the conference website for a call for scholars in early 2011, for those interested in presenting "works-in-progress." SoTL work-group participants who are selected as CASTL scholars will receive free institute registration. Faculty also are invited to attend the institute's presentations, workshops and sessions, or receive mentoring from experienced SoTL scholars. More information.
