graduate of Creighton University, Michael Fahey is a loyal alumnus, dynamic leader
and committed person for others. In his public service, philanthropy and
ongoing support of civic, cultural and educational endeavors, Fahey
continuously and unselfishly volunteers his time and talent.
Fahey was sworn in as Omaha’s 49th mayor in 2001 and
was overwhelmingly re-elected in 2005. Fahey served two terms as Omaha’s mayor and was instrumental in the city’s
economic development efforts and the renaissance of downtown Omaha. He worked
to provide positive educational options for Omaha youth, and opened a new day
shelter facility as part of his vision to break the cycle of homelessness for
the city’s poorest citizens.
A successful business executive, Fahey began a small title
insurance company, American Land Title, in 1978. He sold it in 1990 but
remained CEO, guiding the company to become one of the nation’s largest.
Fahey served on a task force to enhance after-school mentoring and tutoring for
Omaha school children, and was one of 16 individuals honored by the
Afterschool Alliance in 2008 for his work in this area. He is also an active
member of the Nebraska Community Center Learning Network, a public-private
partnership supporting school-community collaborations.
Fahey has served on the boards of Holy Name Housing, the
American Red Cross Heartland Chapter and Creighton Preparatory School. From
1981 to 1991, Fahey served on the Omaha Planning Board and served as chairman
from 1984 to 1991.
He established an annual scholarship at Creighton for
students in need who are involved in student life and leadership. Another gift
supported the John P. Fahey Career Center on campus, which was named for his
brother, a 1971 Creighton law graduate. Through a gift during the Ignite the Greatness campaign in
2014, Fahey honored his sister, Sister Mary Ann Fahey, CSJ, by naming a room in
the Harper Center in her memory.
For his service to and support of the Omaha community and
Creighton University, Creighton University is proud to present the Hon. Michael
G. Fahey with its Alumni Achievement Citation.
The Alumni Achievement Citation may be granted at Commencement, or at any regular or designated convocation of the total University.
